Easter, Whitsun and Ascension Day.

Especially in the spring, there are many public holidays in the calendar.

If you are employed by a company which has a collective agreement with Finansforbundet, you are typically entitled to four additional public holidays per year, all with full pay.

These would be Friday after Ascension Day, Constitution Day, Christmas Eve (24 December) and New Year’s Eve (31 December)

If you're employed without a collective agreement, you're typically not entitled to time off with pay on any of these days," explains Rasmus Nørgaard Høgh, who is a senior consultant with the policy and negotiation team ("Politik og Forhandling") of Finansforbundet.

"So far, we're the only trade union that has ensured it's a public holiday for everyone," says Rasmus Nørgaard Høgh, senior consultant at Finansforbundet.

Expensive days

As mentioned, one of these four days is the Friday after Ascension Day. It was included in Finansforbundet's collective agreements during the negotiations in 2008.

"So far, we're the only trade union that has ensured it's a public holiday for everyone," underlines Rasmus Nørgaard Høgh.

And even though a day off in itself is always nice, the four additional public holidays actually also have a high value in terms of money, emphasises Rasmus Nørgaard Høgh.

"It would be expensive if you were to pay for the same freedom yourself," he says.

For a typical financial sector employee, the four days run into an annual value of more than DKK 12,000.

Special payment for working

Not everywhere in the financial sector are you allowed to take time off with pay on the extra public holidays. And that is why it is important to know that you are typically also entitled to extra good pay if you are one of those who have to work anyway.

"Know that you may be entitled to special payment if you have to work on one of those days," says Rasmus Nørgaard Høgh.
