Scammers' favorite trick: Banks and customers are now losing most money on this scam
In the second half of 2025, especially one type of fraud increased significantly, and losses spiralled from DKK 9.7 million to DKK 17.4 million. A new security solution is in fact ready to be implemented, but the date of its launch remains uncertain.
Online banking fraud continuing to rise
While new security measures are being developed, criminals continue untiringly to try to gain access to customers' digital deposit boxes.
Overall, the number of online banking fraud cases rose from 2,213 in the first half of 2025 to 2,650 in the second half.
The total amount that criminals tried to steal rose from over DKK 78 million to just under DKK 86 million. However, total loss in both half-year periods amounted to around DKK 45 million.
According to Finance Denmark, this is evidence that banks and customers have become better at curbing fraud attempts. Thus, the number of cases ending without a loss increased by approximately 50 per cent from the first to the second half-year period of 2025.
Figures from the Danish Ministry of Justice show that 37,000 Danes were exposed to contact fraud in 2024, compared with 27,000 in 2023, representing an increase of 37 per cent.
