Strengthen your skills – how to get started

Take the next steps in your skills development at Danske Bank. See the list that can help kick-start your skills development.

You know that the future requires new skills, and that skills development is important. You may have thought: “I should do something about it.”

But you haven’t quite got started yet. You’re not alone.

On this page, you’ll find practical advice on how to get started and take the next steps in your skills development at Danske Bank.

You are not alone

The feeling of being behind with your tasks is something we hear from many colleagues at Danske Bank. Not because they lack motivation, but because everyday work demands attention with daily operations, meetings and deadlines.

And when the day is over, skills development and further training are often the first things to be deprioritised in a busy workday.

When you’re unsure about when or how to get started, the risk of never getting started at all increases.

We often hear the following questions from our members:

“What should I focus on developing?”
“Which skills will be important in my role?”
“How do I know what will be in demand in the future?”

An obvious place to start

Instead of starting with the big, overarching questions, focus on the fact that you don’t need to know the entire journey from the outset. Start with the first steps.

An obvious place to start is the HR-platform, where you can find your job profile. Your job profile is the most concrete starting point for understanding what is expected of you in your role.

Start by reflecting on your own job profile.

Use your leader

Use your leader as a sparring partner and take a proactive approach to the dialogue.

Your leader may have insights that can be beneficial to you – for example in relation to Forward ’28, Strategic Workforce Planning, or local conditions within your Business Unit.

A short conversation with your leader can help clarify issues such as:

  • Which skills will be important in our team/department in the future?
  • How can I reposition and develop my skills?
  • How can we create time in the calendar for skills development?

The goal of your conversation may be to agree on:

  • One clear priority for your skills development
  • One overall direction
  • One concrete action you can take going forward

Development doesn’t have to be big and overwhelming

Skills development is not only about long training days.

It can also take place in smaller chunks that you can complete in 10–30 minutes. Small steps count too and can be your kickstart to getting started.

Below, you’ll find some tips on how to get started. But first, we’d like to explain why skills development is important and provide some background.

In a busy workday, development can feel like a luxury. But in fact, skills development can:

  • Make your work easier
  • Increase your sense of security in your job

Development is also a right under our collective agreement. If you are covered by the collective agreement at Danske Bank, you are covered by the clauses on skills development.

You have the right to:

  • Skills development
  • An ongoing development plan
  • Skills development being discussed at least once a year
Even though it is a right, you are responsible for taking advantage of the opportunity and setting aside the necessary time.
