How to use AI in your job search

Artificial intelligence is used more and more for job hunting. Some people are already using it actively.  Others are curious, but uncertain about how to use it sensibly.

In a job hunting context, it makes sense to regard AI as a tool; Not as a replacement of experience, reflection or relations, but as support in a process holding many choices and considerations.

That is why AI is 'only' a sounding board

AI can be used in many aspects of the job hunt. It provides an overview, asks the right questions and structures thoughts that may otherwise be difficult to control.

Used in that way, AI works as a type of sounding board. An option enabling you to test wordings, examine angles and learn more about your current view.

What is key is that you stay in control of the process. AI is able to suggest, but not assess, what makes sense in the specific situation.

How to use AI input for your CV

AI is often used when preparing CVs and applications.  Especially when it comes to focus and wording, AI supports the writing process.

Nevertheless, it is important to take into consideration that AI-generated text often sounds generic, bleak and slightly off. AI cannot replace your tone of voice, your reasoning and your way of prioritising. 

Consequently, it makes sense to regard yourself as an editor rather than a writer when using AI. You choose what works, adjust the language and discard what doesn't feel right. AI provides raw material, not texts ready for use.

Does the text feel right?

AI may also be used in connection with LinkedIn and networks.
For example for:

• drafting enquiries and messages
• preparing questions for network interviews
• reflecting on your own profile and professional position

In this case too, AI should not be the sole source of input. Your voice and approach should still stand out clearly in the dialogue with others.

When working with AI, you must ask yourself whether the text feels right, relevant and recognisable. If not, this indicates that additional editing is needed or that the AI output should be put aside completely.

No shortcuts with AI

AI will make your job search clearer and more efficient. It will save you time and provide structure in a process that may otherwise feel complicated.

At the same time, AI doesn't change the fundamentals of a job search; relations, dialogue, understanding of tasks and the ability to create value remain key elements.

Used with care, AI is an effective job search method. Used without care, you distance yourself from your reader. The pivotal point is therefore not whether you use AI, but how you chose to use it and who is in control.
