Get your job search off to a strong start
There are many ways to approach a job search. The important thing is to find one that makes sense to you and will keep you motivated over time.
Getting started on a job search is often about gaining an overview of the process, the opportunities and where you stand.
Searching for a job is a comprehensive discipline that may differ from one person to the next. Some people set a clear direction from the get-go. Others find it along the way.
It makes sense to get an idea of the elements of your job search before you decide how to approach it.
Job search activities in one or more tracks
Job search activities typically include several interconnected elements impacting each other. For instance:
- Clarification of wishes and direction
- CV and job application
- Structure and strategy for everyday life
- Networking and conversations with fellow networkers
- LinkedIn and visibility
- Use of artificial intelligence as support
You may work on these tracks in parallel or choose to focus on one at a time. What matters is that you know the tools and understand how they interact.
Advertised or non-advertised jobs – understand the difference
To many people, looking for a job means looking for an advertised position. That is an important part of the picture, but not the only part.
A job search may also be carried out when no job is advertised. You may become aware of job openings through your network, conversations, by expressing your interest in and being visible even before the job is advertised, or if it is not advertised at all.
The two approaches complement each other. Sometimes it makes sense to focus mostly on advertised positions, while at other times, it will be more productive to take a broader and more proactive approach. It's about understanding the difference and making a conscious choice.
More paths to clarification
Some people find peace in getting clarity early. Others find clarity through action, conversations and experience.
Some achieve new insights through activity. A conversation with a relevant contact. An application which requires you to articulate your skills. A post on LinkedIn expressing your challenges.
Your job search will develop step by step, and any adjustments along the way are a natural part of the process.
Ways to keep the job search from taking over
Structure makes it easier to stay committed to the job search over time. It's about overview, daily rhythm and choosing to focus.
A simple structure will bring peace of mind and make it easier to take the next step without the job search taking over.
How to use your CV, network, LinkedIn and AI strategically
The CV and job application remain key elements when searching for a job. The same applies to networking and visibility on LinkedIn. Many also use artificial intelligence as a practical tool for exchanging views and ideas, wording and preparation.
Seeing all these methods as part of a greater whole, makes it easier to use them strategically and in a way that suits your situation.
